RBVH- North Carolina State University Lymphoma study

RBVH- North Carolina State University Lymphoma study
Red Bank Veterinary Hospital is working in collaboration with North Carolina State University (NCSU)-University of North Carolina on a funded project for dogs with lymphoma (LSA). Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the fifth most common human systemic malignancy in the U.S., also ranking fifth in cancer deaths and canine LSA is the most common tumor seen in veterinary medicine. The purpose of this study is to determine if LSA in dogs may serve as model for a particular form of LSA in humans. Specifically, the study will evaluate similarities based upon histology, cell surface markers, and common cytogenetic abnormalities. This information will be obtained from the removal of a lymph node from dogs with LSA. Information gained from this study will be very valuable and will help both dogs and humans.

Eligiblity:

  • Any dog with newly diagnosed lymphoma that is deemed healthy to undergo a short anesthesia to allow the removal of a single lymph node.

Funding:

  • The anesthesia and surgery to remove the single lymph node are all covered by the study. This may be performed on a same day basis or with an overnight stay (overnight hospitalization is funded).
  • Phenotyping (determining the form of lymphoma) will be performed by NCSU at no costs. Certain phenotypes such as T cell LSA are more aggressive in nature and the protocol may be changed based upon phenotype results. This test is normally $250.
  • Each patient will receive $400 toward the cost of staging (examination, chest radiographs, bloodwork, ultrasound) and/or treatment
